The fifth of five CDs in this series by the budget label Laserlight differs from the first four in that it spans 16 years in pianist/singer Nat King Cole's career. He is heard with his original trio (which included guitarist Oscar Moore and bassist Wesley Prince) on six selections from and with his quartet (which had Jack Constanzo on congas) for "I Used to Love You."9/

On JAZZ COLLECTOR EDITION * NAT KING COLE Vol.5, sound quality is marred throughout by the inclusion of heavy echo. Regardless, these are 15 fine examples of why Nat Cole was considered the master of elegant jazz. Tracks #1 - 6 are V-Disc waxings, made in #7 - 11 are from the mids, and feature a full orchestra/5(7).

This five-CD set, despite the lack of definitive liner notes, is highly recommended. The bulk of this package (most of four discs) features the Nat King Cole Trio on radio transcriptions during and these renditions are easily the equal of their more famous studio recordings.
