The Vienna Philharmonic completed the recording of the Haydn Variations without conductor as a tribute to Kertesz and to fill out his last recording, the Brahms Symphony #3. Among his other fine recordings were those of the Mozart symphonies #25, 29, 33, 35 "Haffner, 36 Linz, 39, and #/5(5).

The Vienna Philharmonic plays magically and sounds beautiful. Kertesz isn't my first choice in this repertoire (though the "Haffner" is really strong!), but in my opinion one can never have too many accounts of the great Mozart Symphonies, so I am happy to have this CD in my collection/5(5).

He recorded both symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic with EMI (September ) and later in that decade with DG cycle. Truth to tell, whenever I go anywhere near that EMI cycle, the Herbie Soup-o-Meter goes nuts (with the possible exception of K Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 38 & 39)/5(7).

This CD collects Symphonies Nos. 33, 39 & 40, with the first two from October and the last from November , one the conductor's final recordings. As on the other two Mozart discs in this series, the Vienna Philharmonic plays magically and sounds beautiful, but I award a fifth star here because the conductor seems the most comfortable performing these bread and butter symphonies/5(5).
